Why is Oral Hygiene Important to Orthodontic Treatment?
Brushing and flossing is a healthy habit to develop. When you have braces and other orthodontic appliances, you need to learn new techniques to protect your teeth and gums. The brackets, bands, and other components of orthodontic appliances may hide bacteria that can lead to gingivitis and other problems.
How Do I Practice Good Oral Hygiene During My Orthodontic Treatment?
When you have your braces installed, we demonstrate how to brush and floss around the wires, brackets, and bands. If you use Invisalign®, we will also show you how to care for the aligners. You may need to use products that are specifically designed for working around braces, or you may need to simply adapt to how you take care of your teeth now.
What Oral Hygiene Products Will I Need During My Orthodontic Treatment?
- Interdental toothbrushes are designed to clean the teeth and gums in patients who have brackets and wires. The brushes fit between the teeth and generally replace or complement flossing.
- Antibacterial mouthwash adds an extra layer of protection to brushing and using interdental toothbrushes. You will use a small amount of the mouthwash to rinse for one minute. Dr. Marc S. Wright may recommend that you use the rinse up to four times per day. In addition to removing bacteria, antibacterial mouthwash also helps with gum irritation, sores, and other oral health issues.
- Topical fluoride helps prevent cavities while wearing braces. The product kills bacteria and replenishing the minerals in your teeth. The paste is applied with a toothbrush and allowed to remain on the teeth for one minute. You should not rinse your mouth, but only spit out any excess. Food and beverages should be avoided for at least 30 minutes after using topical fluoride so that it can penetrate the surface of your teeth.
How Do I Care for My Removable Orthodontic Appliances?
Removable orthodontic appliances, such as retainer, headgear, and Invisalign® aligners, need some attention during your orthodontic treatment. When you brush and floss your teeth, take a few extra minutes to clean these appliances. Soak them for a few minutes in a glass of water with denture cleaner.
